What Is Hydro Dipping?
Hydro dipping — also called water transfer printing or hydrographics — is a process that applies intricate, full-wrap patterns to three-dimensional objects using a water-soluble film. Unlike paint or vinyl wraps, hydro dipping conforms perfectly to curved, contoured, and recessed surfaces, making it ideal for metal parts, automotive pieces, sporting goods, and more.

How Does Hydro Dipping Work?
The process follows a precise series of steps:
- Base coat: The object is first cleaned and primed, then painted with a base color that affects the final appearance of the pattern.
- Film application: A PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) film printed with the desired pattern is laid flat on the surface of a water tank.
- Activator spray: A chemical activator is sprayed onto the film, dissolving it into a floating ink layer on the water's surface.
- Dipping: The object is slowly pushed through the floating ink at a controlled angle, causing the pattern to wrap seamlessly around every contour.
- Rinse & dry: The piece is rinsed to remove excess film residue, then dried thoroughly.
- Clear coat: A protective top coat is applied to seal the finish and add durability — critical for metal pieces exposed to the elements or regular handling.

Hydro dipping films come in hundreds of designs. Popular categories include:
