A "break" in sheet metal work refers to a bend — and a metal brake (sometimes spelled "break") is the tool used to make those bends. In roofing, breaks are used to fabricate the trim pieces that finish off a metal roof installation: the ridge caps, eave trim, rake trim, valley flashing, and drip edges that seal the edges and transitions of the roof.

- Width: Standard roofing trim runs 10–14 feet in length. Make sure your brake can handle the sheet width you're working with.
- Bend angle: Most roofing applications need bends up to 135°. Confirm the brake's maximum bend angle.
- Portability: Job site work often requires a brake you can transport and set up on a roof or in a trailer. Look for folding or lightweight designs.
What Metal Thickness Are You Working With?
Most residential metal roofing panels run between 26-gauge and 29-gauge steel. Trim and flashing for agricultural or commercial applications may run heavier at 22–24 gauge.
